August 23 will mark 80 years since the signing of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany that sparked World War II and doomed half of Europe to decades of misery. The Pact contained the secret protocol which effectively carved up Eastern Europe into spheres of influence.

On 11 July, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania summoned a representative of the Russian Embassy and expressed a protest over the decision by the Russian Federation’s Western Military District to fire gun salutes to mark the anniversary of occupation of Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, this Saturday, and Kaunas on 1 August.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania expresses its regret regarding the resolution of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE). In the early morning of 25 June in Strasbourg, PACE decided to amend its Rules of Procedure, weakening its sanctions mechanism, and opening the way for the unilateral return of the Russian delegation to PACE.

Lithuania welcomes the conclusions of the Dutch-led Joint Investigation Team (JIT) and the launch by the Public Prosecution Service of the Netherlands on 20 June of the criminal prosecution against the four suspects, who are now facing murder charges in the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 over the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine.

It is essential to ensure the overall progress of the region. The EU needs to fulfil its unambiguous commitment to the Western Balkans European integration. There is no “plan B”.

On 27 March, the Vilnius Regional Court issued a ruling on the 13 January case. 67 individuals were found guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity for their involvement in the Soviet aggression on 13 January 1991 in Vilnius.

Lithuania strongly supports Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity. We condemn the ongoing military aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine that flagrantly violates international law, the Charter of the United Nations, the provisions of the Helsinki Final Act, and bilateral agreements between Ukraine and Russia. We will continue to support Ukraine and coherently implement the policy of non-recognition of the illegal annexation and occupation of Crimea five years ago.

Lithuania welcomes the ratification by Greece's parliament of the historic agreement between Greece and Macedonia that changes the name of Macedonia. The country will now be called the Republic of Northern Macedonia. This sets an example of reconciliation between different nations and will bring a decades-old dispute close to an end.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania strongly condemns actions undertaken by the Russian Federation on 25 November against Ukrainian navy vessels, which resulted in a physical blockade of the Azov Sea and the ramming of Ukrainian boats. In addition, the Russian coast guard vessels opened fire, injured Ukrainian sailors, and illegally seized Ukrainian navy vessels.
