Lithuania’s Foreign Minister bids farewell to the outgoing Apostolic Nuncio
On 22 March in Vilnius, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius received the outgoing Apostolic Nuncio of the Holy See, Dean of the Diplomatic Corps Archbishop Pedro López Quintana.
The Minister thanked the Nuncio for his active work in Lithuania and his personal contribution to Pope Francis’ visit to Lithuania.
"The apostolic journey of Pope Francis to Lithuania, his prayer, sincere words and interaction with the ordinary people and the youth will be remembered by the people of Lithuania for a long time," said the Minister L. Linkevičius.
During the meeting, the Minister also thanked thethe Apostolic Nuncio for a principled position of the Holy See to not recognize the illegal occupation of Lithuania by the Soviet Union and for maintaining diplomatic relations with our country. After the restoration of its independence, Lithuania continued to maintain close ties with the Holy See, both on bilateral level and in solving relevant international policy issues. The Holy See has been actively engaged in addressing international peacekeeping issues, has supported the European unity, and called for action on climate change, as well as to tackle the impacts of migration.
The President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė awarded the Nuncio the Grand Cross of the Order for Merits to Lithuania in 2019.
The Archbishop Pedro López Quintana was appointed as the Apostolic Nuncio to Lithuania in 2014. He has been the fifth Apostolic Nuncio to Lithuania after the restoration of independence. Pedro López Quintana also represents the Holy See in Latvia and Estonia.
